Santé, Sociétés, Développement (SSD), a department of the University Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2, was created in 1984. Since 1993 it has been associated formally with the French national organisation for scientific research, CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), Department of Human Science and Society, section 31 of the National Research Committee, and has the status of Unité Mixte de Recherche (UMR 5036), an official research unit. Taking the social sciences and more especially anthropology as our starting points, SSD’s problematic is based on an interdisciplinary approach to health matters. From the outset we have relied on the close collaboration that exists within the University of Bordeaux 2 between the medical and social sciences. We are also keen to integrate an environmental dimension into our research. This aim for diversity can also be seen in the makeup of the research team. SSD’s research reveals our particular interest in development situations, with major studies in Africa (Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Cameroun, Niger, South Africa), India and Brazil. However, there are also several studies which deal with France. In the context of our research activities, SSD also particaptes in the courses of doctoral students from the University Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 and the other Bordeaux Universities. We also have close links with the Doutorado em Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento of the University of Paraná (Brazil). As well as producing scientific papers based on our own research, the SSD has also built up a body of documentation in the field of social sciences and health. Since the creation of SSD, the director has been Claude Raynaut, Anthropologist and CNRS Research Director. The Department is located on the Carreire campus of the University Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2, ground floor of the Anatomy ED building, inside the Centre Labusquière.
